BELGIUM-BRUJAS
It is the heart of Europe. In fact it it Europe in miniature bcause it has the best of every European country. Quality of life is high. Belgium is a very cosmopolitan country, 30% of its population is foreign.
Its currency is the Belgian franc and its official languages are French and Flemish. The best time to visit Belgium is Spring, as the rest of the European countries. However, it is a good thing that in summer these cities are almost empty because of the holiday season. Moreover, summers are not excessively hot, climate is mild rather than being wet and rainy during the year.
Shops are open from 10am to 18pm from Monday to Saturday. The typical shopping in Belgium is the hand embroidery, pottery and the famous Godiva chocolate. There is a great variety of good quality beer.
Roads are well designed, and easy to drive by. Belgium is a small country, its cities are not far one from the other, so it can be perfectly visited by car. You can find the main car renting agencies at the airport of <brussels. It is nice pointing out that all the motorways are lighted 100% (the only place in the world).
We cannot go on talking about Belgium without referring to to Brussels.
"The Grand Place" is, without any doubt, the most emblematic place in the city, where you can find the European Community Headquarters and Heysel Stadium. The famous Atomium statue is a symbol for the city. It was built on the occassion of the Universal Exhibition in 1958. It has nine spheres and symbolizes an iron being increased a hundred million times. In its upper sphere there is a restaurant where you can have a good sight of the city. This statue is 100 metres of height.
We must not forget the famous " Manneken Pis" ( a small sculpture of a boy doing a wee-wee)It is a Barroquian fountain dated from XVIII century. This statue is placed in a corner, between the streets " Rue de l´Eture" and "Rue du Chêne, a place in the centre. It might not be known that this sculpture is naked and it is dressed every day with one of the 360 suits exhibited in a museum.
In Amberes you must have a stroll by the harbour (the third one more important in the world).
Do not miss either the " Plaza Mayor" and the "Casa de los oficios" ( a learning trade).
In Gaute it is obligued to visit San Baron cathedral (the famous "Mystic Lamb" is exhibited here).
To end with we must refer to Brujas. A charming medieval city full of channels, also so-called "the little northern Italy". Do not miss a cross by its channels.
The focal point is the Provincial Square and Palace. From this point many medieval narrow streets emerge.
We advise you to have a portion of mussels together with a stout in one of the places outside of this square. These mussels from Northern Sea are served in a stew.
The obligued shopping in Brujas is the typical clothing with lace borders (called "Roout de Foe"). Such clothings are very famous art pieces all over the world.
